City of Love
By Editor • Feb 1st, 2009 • Category: Features, Historical and Instering FactsOn February 14 we celebrate love and the people we love by; spending the day with them, sending them flowers candy, or even calling them just to say hi, but why do we do this all on what seems like just another day in the year?, Because that day is known too many as Valentine’s Day.
Although, most of us do the thing I listed before, not all places celebrate the holiday the same way; in Wales not only does their celebration go by a different name, but it also falls on a different month and day. On January 25 the people of Wales celebrate “St Dwynwen’s Day” in honor of ‘St Dwynwen,’ the saint of Welsh lovers. Like Wales, another place that celebrates the holiday on a different day is Romania, though they technical do not celebrate Valentine’s Day they do have a holiday for love called, Dragobete. Dragobete is celebrated on February 24; the name of the celebration comes from a Romania folklore that is supposal the son of Baba Dochia a character from the Romania mythology.
In Turkey, Valentine’s Day is called “Sevgililer Günü” (Sweethearts’ Day), and like Turkey many other cities have a different name for the Holiday, in Guatemala it is called “Día Del Amor y la Amistad” (Day of Love and Friendship), in Brazil it is known as ” Boyfriends’/Girlfriends’ Day,” or to Brazilians “Dia dos Namorados,” and is celebrated on June 12th. Many Asian countries spilt up the Holiday where in Japan and South Korea, Valentine’s Day is when woman give the men in their lives chocolates, and in returner men give woman candy and other gifts such as jewelry and flowers, on March 14. However, Koreans do not just celebrate Valentine’s Day there are many romance related Holidays through out the year; there is Rose Day and Kiss Day, even a day for hugs (Hug Day), and the list just does not stop there; in country the 14th of every month is a love based holiday. On the 29th of Bahman; Iranians celebrate “Sepandarmazgan,” a day for love and family, nevertheless they do celebrate Valentine’s Day; although it is mainly young girls and boy who give out gifts and candy to their friends.

As you can see Valentine’s Day is celebrated in many different countries and ways, though each place has a special day to celebrate the love we have for the people in our lives. As you can see some places have more holidays then others, each is all somewhat similar to each other, and gives you the chance to say “I love you” to someone you care about. It is great to see how different courtiers around the world fete this Holiday, and learn something new and interesting, I hope everyone has amazing Valentine’s Day, St Dwynwen’s Day, Sevgililer Günü, Día Del Amor y la Amistad, and Dia dos Namorados.
