Mother’s Day Film Festival

Ah, Mother’s Day; is a day for moms all over the globe to kick back, relax, and let the cards stream in. Featuring breakfast in bed, flowers, and of course, a day at the spa – but wait! What about the movie marathons? divine-secrets-of-the-ya-ya The tear jerking, hard-core snogging, romantic, and girly flicks that can make even the hardest women crack? Mother’s Day is just not complete without the movie marathons. The question is what movies make the cut?

The first movie on every mom’s list should be the 2002 flick “The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood”. The movie is about a playwright named Siddalee Walker who is just about to make her, big break in the entertainment world. But when she does a magazine interview and reveals her unhappy childhood, her mother becomes furious and humiliated. The Ya-Ya Sisterhood, a former secret society made up of Siddalee’s mother’s closet friends, kidnap Siddalee from her New York apartment and takes her back to her hometown, Louisiana. It’s there where they show Siddalee the top secret Ya-Ya scrapbook which explains why her mother mistreated her.

Following “The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood” is the hilarious movie “Monster-in-law”, monsterinlaw_posterstaring Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda. After countless failed relationships and various blind dates, Charlotte “Charlie” Cantilini (Lopez) finally finds her Prince Charming; Dr. Kevin Fields (Michael Vartan). When Kevin proposes, Charlie thinks everything is going to be perfect – until she meets Viola, Kevin’s crazy mother.

Traumatized by the loss of her career as a news anchor, Viola tries to hold onto her son by trying to scare off Charlie. Viola’s long-time assistant, Ruby, tries to help the best she can, but Charlie can see right through her nice girl façade and fights back. The claws come out as the women fight to see just who the alpha-female in the family is.

becauseisaidso_200612071602Just as funny as it is romantic-comedy, “Because I Said So”, it is also another Mother’s Day must-see. The film’s plot revolves around the overprotective love between Daphne Wilder and her three daughters, Maggie, Mae, and Milly. Maggie is a calm psychologist with her life set out for her while Mae is the sexy and impertinent wild-cat of the family. And then there’s Milly, the shy, adorable, and insecure wall-flower who, when it comes to men, is like a Venus flytrap.

With the aim of trying to protect her youngest daughter from making the same mistakes as she did, Daphne tries setting Milly up with the perfect man. As the movie plays out, comic mayhem unfolds as Daphne continues doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. Their mother-daughter bond is put to the test in the complexity, but in the end, the girls help Daphne finally learn the rights and wrongs of motherly love and how far it really should go.

The next film in your stack should definitely be, “Georgia Rule”. It shows the inseparable love between grandmothers, mothers, and daughters, no matter what happens. Lily, the dysfunctional alcoholic mother, ships her uncontrollable rebel daughter, Rachel, to Idaho to spend the summer with her strict by the book grandmother, Georgia, to try and straighten her out. But when hidden family secrets are revealed, Lily finds the real meaning behind Rachel’s rebellious attitude. The three women ultimately come to an understanding that, despite what happens; the relationship between them can never be broken.

And, of course, mamma_mia_cast_posterwho could forget the bubbly musical “Mamma Mia!”? Set on the colorful islands of beautiful Greece, this movie is sure to reel you in at the start. Sophie Sheridan wants her father to walk her down the aisle at her wedding, but finds out from her mother’s old diary that her dad could be any one of three men. When she secretly invites all three to visit behind her mothers back, conflict and confusion begins to arise, all leading up to the big question which one is the her father? With a load of ABBA songs, this movie will have you up off the couch and singing along in know time.

Now, the movie list is ready, the popcorn is popped – what are you waiting for? Plop yourself on the couch, curl up in some comfy pj’s, and hit play for a fun night designed specifically with you in mind.
